Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
When a loved one has an anxiety disorder, it can be extremely difficult to watch him or her struggle on a daily basis and not know what, if anything, you can do for him or her. While you may feel completely helpless, there are some things you can do to help your loved one learn to cope with his or her anxiety and go on to live a more worry-free life. Below are some suggestions you may find helpful:
- Take the time to get informed about anxiety disorders, learning as much as you can about the possible symptoms and the treatment options available. Educating yourself can help you better understand this illness and know what to expect during the recovery process.
- If your loved one is struggling with the symptoms of an anxiety disorder, suggest that he or she seeks help from a mental health professional. A mental health professional can help teach your loved one the skills needed to control his or her anxiety and reduce the presence of distressing symptoms.
- Do not be judgmental or minimize your loved one’s feelings. Try to be supportive and patient with your loved one as best you can and remember that it can take time to for him or her to get his or her anxiety under control.
- Encourage your loved one to continue to engage in the treatment process. Help him or her remember to take any medication that is prescribed and to attend all of his or her therapy appointments.
