Synthetic Marijuana Abuse & Addiction Treatment Center
While substance abuse is a widespread problem in society today, and the presence of an addiction to any substance is dangerous, it is the abuse of and addiction to synthetic substances that elicit much confusion amongst professionals. As a relatively new classification of substances, synthetic drugs, such as synthetic marijuana, are rapidly becoming some of the most perilous drugs on the market. The main concern with these types of substances is the fact that the chemical compounds used in the production of drugs like synthetic marijuana vary vastly and can be indecipherable to many researchers. While research is consistently occurring, the issue remains that individuals who abuse these substances are at risk of experiencing devastating, and unpredictable, consequences. An addiction to synthetic marijuana is especially troubling as it has been known to cause death after only one single use. For this reason, it is imperative that individuals who have begun abusing synthetic marijuana, also known as K2 and spice, receive treatment immediately in order to overcome their compulsion to use this toxic drug.
At Kansas Drug Rehabilitation, we fully recognize how difficult and intimidating the journey to obtaining sobriety can seem, and so we have developed specialized programming that strives to make the process one that is as comfortable as possible. By engaging in our comprehensive addiction treatment program, individuals who are struggling with an addiction to synthetic marijuana can develop the skills needed to not only achieve sobriety, but to maintain life-long recovery.

Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment
Discovering that a family member or loved one has developed a problem with abusing synthetic marijuana can be extremely troubling. With all of the confusion surrounding this drug, as well as the ever-increasing reports of devastating consequences that occur as a direct result of its use, you are likely feeling an immense amount of fear as to what your loved one’s future holds if he or she does not receive the treatment he or she so desperately needs. While you know your loved one needs an intervention, it can be difficult to determine what steps you, as a concerned loved one, should take. Consider the following:
- Educate yourself on the information that is presently known about synthetic marijuana. Doing so can not only help you identify signs that someone is abusing this substance, but it can also help you gauge what level of treatment may be most beneficial in helping your loved one.
- Compile the findings you obtain during your research and present them to your loved one in a calm, yet firm, manner. Explain why you are concerned and express the detriments that ongoing use of this drug can bring about.
- Research treatment options and sort through them with your loved one. Offer to accompany him or her to any appointments for evaluations that are scheduled.
- Once your loved one has become engaged in treatment, be an active part of his or her therapeutic process. The more involved loved ones are, the more successful treatment outcomes are likely to be.
- Remain a constant source of nonjudgmental support, ensuring your loved one that you will be there every step of the way.
Why Consider Treatment at Kansas Drug Rehabilitation
Although extensive conclusions as to the long-term effects that can result from chronic synthetic marijuana abuse are still being researched, there are a number of devastating consequences that are presently known to occur. People who abuse synthetic marijuana are susceptible to experiencing irreversible cognitive impairment, having a heart attack, or suffering from a stroke. Additionally, psychosis has been cited as being a prominent result from the use of this substance, as is the need for hospitalization. Interpersonal relationships are also likely to become highly disturbed as individuals become all-consumed by their desire to use synthetic marijuana. Most tragically, there have been reports of people dying after only a single use of this extremely disturbing drug. Fortunately, by engaging in appropriate treatment in a timely fashion, these devastating consequences can be avoided.

Patients who require immediate stabilization due to the presence of psychiatric concerns or those who are in need of medical detoxification services can receive these interventions at Desert Flower prior to engaging in Kansas Drug Rehabilitation’s residential care. When patients present to Kansas Drug Rehabilitation with synthetic marijuana in their systems, the first step in their treatment may be to undergo the medical detox services offered at Desert Flower Hospital so that their bodies can become rid of the toxic substance. This period of detoxification is monitored by medical personnel in order to ensure that individuals remain safe and as comfortable as possible during the process. Patients will also engage in a number of therapeutic interventions during their time in Desert Flower. Following detox and completion of programming at our hospital, patients will then engage in comprehensive treatment at Kansas Drug Rehabilitation’s behavioral health residential treatment center.
Treatment for substance abuse concerns, including the abuse of synthetic marijuana, is delivered through Kansas Drug Rehabilitation’s Addictions and Co-Occurring Disorder Program. It is our belief that, as patients gain new communication skills and learn to build healthy relationships, they can make sound decisions for a healthy quality of life and form deeper connections with others.
Using a biopsychosocial and spiritual approach to care, patients engaged in the Addictions and Co-Occurring Disorder program can partake in the following treatment methods, which are outlined in each patient’s individualized treatment plan, as well as in Kansas Drug Rehabilitation’s daily treatment schedules:
Medication management: When individuals are struggling with the presence of a co-occurring disorder in addition to their addiction to synthetic marijuana, the implementation of psychotropic medications may be incorporated into their overall plan of care. The need for such medications, however, is always determined on a case-by-case basis. Patients who are engaged in the Addictions and Co-Occurring Disorder Program will have the opportunity to meet with either a psychiatrist or qualified physician at a minimum of once per week so that any medications that have been prescribed can be monitored for therapeutic effectiveness and any necessary changes can be made.
Individual therapy: Master’s level clinicians and/or licensed psychologists offer individual therapy sessions with patients several times per week depending upon the treatment modality that is being used. All patients are guaranteed, however, that a minimum of one individual session will take place each week. Each patient’s therapist will be assigned to him or her depending upon the identified presenting concerns, the therapeutic approach that will be used in order to effectively address those concerns, and the specific training that the therapist possesses. These sessions occur in a confidential, one-to-one setting where the patient is afforded the opportunity to discuss his or her progress in treatment, address any concerns that may arise, and process through various feelings that he or she is experiencing.
Group therapy: At the time that patients are admitted into the Addictions and Co-Occurring Disorder Program, they are assigned to a small group of peers, all of whom are engaged in the same program. This group will meet together for therapy sessions four times per week. In addition to serving as a general process group, topics that are covered during these group sessions may include, but are not limited to:
- Relapse prevention
- Anger management
- Healing anxiety
- Didactic lectures
- Working through grief and loss
- Identifying feelings of shame in order to move to a place of resilience
Four Day Family Program: Recognizing the important role of loved ones in the lives of patients, Kansas Drug Rehabilitation includes the Four Day Family program for family members and other close identified loved ones of patients. This program typically occurs during a patient’s third week of treatment and allows loved ones to engage in the therapeutic process to practice healthy communication and boundaries with understanding and support. Family members and loved ones can attend psychoeducational lectures, process groups, and a family dinner that can unify a family unit in a powerful way. Lastly, loved ones can remain in contact with a patient’s primary therapist should questions or concerns arise during the course of treatment.
Therapeutic Recreational Activities Program: In order to help patients build a stronger sense of self and increased confidence as they overcome their synthetic marijuana abuse problem, this program offers patients a myriad of therapeutic activities, which are conducted daily or on a weekly basis. A patient’s participation in such activities will be outlined in his or her treatment plan and may include the following:
- Expressive art
- Equine therapy
- Adventure therapy (including a ropes course and rock wall)
Additional services: In order to fully care for the needs of those who are working through an addiction to synthetic marijuana and any co-occurring conditions, Kansas Drug Rehabilitation is proud to offer a number of additional services through an innovative approach to treatment. Special time is set aside for selected individual appointments which will be outlined in one’s treatment plan in order to address individualized needs. Such services may include, but are not limited to:
- Mindfulness meditation
- Personal training
- Psychological testing
- Somato-emotional response massage (SER massage)
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) SE (Somatic Experiencing) therapies are offered when deemed necessary based upon an assessment conducted by a psychiatrist
Furthermore, patients engaged in the care delivered through the Addictions and Co-Occurring Disorder Program will be provided with educational lectures and will participate in 12-step meetings. Each day will end on a positive note by allowing patients to gather together and reflect through a Gifts and Blessings Ceremony.
Should a patient require stabilization services while engaged in Kansas Drug Rehabilitation’s residential programming, he or she is able to partake in the services supplied by Desert Flower Hospital before returning to residential treatment. The staff of professionals conducts an ongoing assessment of each patient’s progress and needs and offers assistance in making this transition smooth so as to continue the process of healing with as little disruption as possible.
Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment
Kansas Drug Rehabilitation’s method for providing all-encompassing care for every patient who comes for treatment includes thorough discharge planning and continuing care services that are second-to-none. Once a patient engages in services to treat a synthetic marijuana addiction and co-occurring concerns at Kansas Drug Rehabilitation, a comprehensive continued care plan is devised so that they can remain successful once treatment is complete. Those partaking in the services at Desert Flower Hospital meet with continued care staff to assess each individual’s needs and plan for discharge. Those engaged in the residential programming at Kansas Drug Rehabilitation meet with the same continued care staff and regional outreach specialists and partake in lectures and one-on-one planning sessions to ensure quality referrals and to establish any follow-up appointments that may be required once they have been discharged.
Furthermore, patients exiting the residential programming, along with their family members, can benefit from The Connections Program. This program includes 12-month-long case management services that are in place to offer ongoing and substantial support to former patients. A representative from this program contacts patients 48 hours after they are discharged and is available to assist these individuals in seeking and receiving the additional services they need in order to remain successful in the process of healing and recovery.
Lastly, former patients can take part in the Alumni Relations affiliated with Kansas Drug Rehabilitation. These services include groups offered through outpatient centers, which are located across the United States.
