Depression Treatment Center

The presence of any type of mental health condition can cause much distress in the lives of those afflicted by them. Depression is one such mental illness that can elicit monumental disruptions within all areas of a person’s life. People who suffer from depression often struggle with overwhelming feelings of despair that subsequently result in their feeling helpless to change and hopeless about their futures. While everyone experiences periods of sadness and loneliness throughout their lifetimes, those suffering from depression experience these feelings to such an extreme that it hinders their ability to function appropriately on a daily basis, which then further perpetuates their feelings of despair.

At Kansas Drug Rehabilitation, we understand how troubling it can be to face each day when it is tainted by the symptoms of depression, so we have developed specialized programming that is tailored to meet the needs of men and women who need assistance in overcoming the detrimental effects that this disorder can elicit.

Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Treatment

Depression, especially when symptoms are severe, can cause a great deal of devastation in the lives of sufferers. In fact, the symptoms of this condition can cause those closest to a sufferer of depression to develop overwhelming feelings of worry and fear for what the future holds for the person they care about. Rest assured, however, because, as a concerned loved one, there are some things that you can do to help your friend or family member get the treatment he or she needs to manage the symptoms of depression:

  • Do some research on depression so that you can understand the causes and potential effects of this mental illness. Additionally, it is a wise choice to educate yourself on the signs and symptoms of depression so that you can be more adept at identifying them in your close friend or family member.
  • Communicate to your loved one that you are there for him or her, willing to listen to him or her should he or she want to talk about the feelings he or she is experiencing.
  • If your loved one is engaging in self-harming behaviors or is conveying thoughts or plans for suicide, it is imperative that you establish a safety plan with your loved one so that help can be immediately sought should these behaviors occur or thoughts be acted upon.
  • Research treatment options and providers and include your loved one in this process. By making the treatment-seeking process a collaborative one, your loved one can feel empowered in taking steps towards bettering his or her life.
  • Reach out to your loved one’s treatment provider of choice and ask about the process of admissions and treatment methods used. By doing this, and by providing this information to your loved one, it could alleviate any concerns or worry he or she may be feeling about the possibility of seeking treatment for his or her depression.
  • Inform your loved one that you are willing to attend his or her initial assessment to offer support and any additional information that could help formulate his or her treatment plan.
  • Be part of your loved one’s care and be diligent about attending family sessions. By being part of your loved one’s therapeutic process you are showing that you care and are supportive of your loved one during this difficult time.

Lastly, it would be beneficial to be in contact with your loved one’s providers of care. Provided your loved one grants consent for you to speak with those delivering his or her treatment, contact with these professionals can help you stay current on your loved one’s progress and you can receive beneficial resources and tools for helping your loved one once he or she has completed services.

Why Consider Treatment at Kansas Drug Rehabilitation

When individuals are suffering from depression and are denied access to appropriate treatment interventions, the result can be a vast array of negative effects. People with depression often find themselves struggling to perform at the expected level occupationally or may be frequently absent from work, both potentially leading to job loss. These individuals may also struggle to adhere to typical daily tasks and responsibilities, exacerbating feelings of worthlessness and decreased self-esteem. Interpersonal relationships can become highly disturbed, as those suffering from the symptoms of depression frequently isolate themselves. Furthermore, the longer that depression symptoms are allowed to persist without the intervention of appropriate treatment, the more susceptible people become to developing suicidal ideation, or even potentially making attempts at suicide. Tragically, many individuals plagued by depressive disorders also end up engaging in self-harming behaviors. Fortunately, however, there are options for treatment that can successfully alleviate these distressing symptoms and prevent such detrimental outcomes.

If you feel that you are in crisis, or are having thoughts about hurting yourself or others, please call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

The intensive nature of this program incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy workshops in addition to continuously providing psychodynamic therapy throughout the various aspects of the therapeutic process. Patients engaged in the Mood and Anxiety Program are offered the following treatment methods, of which are outlined in each person’s individualized treatment plan, as well as in Kansas Drug Rehabilitation’s daily treatment schedules:

Medication management: Individuals who are suffering from depression often find alleviation from their symptoms through the implementation of psychotropic medications. The need for medication, however, is always determined on a case-by-case basis. Patients engaged in the Mood and Anxiety Program are seen by a psychiatrist or attending physician on a weekly basis in order to determine the need for medication, monitor medication, and adjust any medication that has been prescribed. Registered nurses and clinical technicians also assist in monitoring a patient’s medication needs.

Individual therapy: Upon entering the Mood and Anxiety Program, each patient is assigned a primary therapist with whom they will meet at least once each week. All individual sessions are conducted by Master’s level clinicians and licensed psychologists and are designed to afford patients the opportunity to discuss their progress in treatment, address any concerns that may arise, and process through various feelings that they are experiencing.

Group therapy: At the time that patients are admitted into the Mood and Anxiety Program, they are assigned to a small group of peers, all of whom are engaged in the same program. This group will meet together for therapy sessions four times per week. In addition to serving as a general process group, topics that are covered during these group sessions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Healing anxiety
  • Managing stress
  • Identifying and processing feelings of shame to move to a place of resilience
  • Working through grief and loss
  • Learning about codependency and coping skills
  • Learning about holistic options for healthy living
  • Learning tools for how to express anger in a healthy and productive manner
  • Mindfulness
  • Relapse prevention

Four Day Family Program: Recognizing the important role of loved ones in the lives of patients, Kansas Drug Rehabilitation includes the Four Day Family program for family members and other close identified loved ones of patients. This program typically occurs during a patient’s third week of treatment and allows loved ones to engage in the therapeutic process to practice healthy communication and boundaries with understanding and support. Family members and loved ones can attend psychoeducational lectures, process groups, and a family dinner that can unify a family unit in a powerful way. Lastly, loved ones can remain in contact with a patient’s primary therapist should questions or concerns arise during the course of treatment.

Therapeutic Recreational Activities Program: In order to help patients build a stronger sense of self and increased confidence as they overcome the symptoms of depression, this program offers patients a myriad of therapeutic activities, which are conducted daily or on a weekly basis. A patient’s participation in such activities will be outlined in his or her treatment plan and may include the following:

Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment

Kansas Drug Rehabilitation’s method for providing all-encompassing care for every patient who comes for treatment includes thorough discharge planning and continuing care services that are second-to-none. Once a patient engages in services to treat depression at Kansas Drug Rehabilitation, a comprehensive continued care plan is devised so that they can remain successful once treatment is complete. Those partaking in the services at Desert Flower Hospital meet with continued care staff to assess each individual’s needs and plan for discharge. Those engaged in the residential programming at Kansas Drug Rehabilitation meet with the same continued care staff and regional outreach specialists and partake in lectures and one-on-one planning sessions to ensure quality referrals and to establish any follow-up appointments that may be required once they have been discharged.

Furthermore, patients exiting the residential programming, along with their family members, can benefit from The Connections Program. This program includes 12-month-long case management services that are in place to offer ongoing and substantial support to former patients. A representative from this program contacts patients 48 hours after they are discharged and is available to assist these individuals in seeking and receiving the additional services they need in order to remain successful in the process of healing and recovery.

Lastly, former patients can take part in the Alumni Relations affiliated with Kansas Drug Rehabilitation. These services include groups offered through outpatient centers, which are located across the United States.
